Launching the “Alliance of Civilizations” Project in Romania
Official Ceremony, House of Parliament, Bucharest

The event was organized at the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Joint Permanent Commission of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate for relations with UNESCO, the Governmental Department of Interethnic Relations and UN Resident Agencies based in Romania, under the patronage of the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Ms. Roberta Alma Anastase. On this occasion, the Charter of the Alliance of Civilizations will be signed, representing the common commitment assumed by partners with the aim of promoting cultural, ethnic and religious diversity.

UNESCO-CEPES and other UN agencies are assisting the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the implementation of the Romanian National Strategy on the Alliance of Civilizations (AoC) initiative; UNESCO-CEPES is member of the AoC Steering Committee in Romania.

The Alliance of Civilization was established in 2005, at the initiative of the Governments of Spain and Turkey, under the auspices of the United Nations. A High-level Group of experts was formed by former Secretary-General Kofi Annan to explore the roots of polarization between societies and cultures today, and to recommend a practical programme of action to address this issue.

The AoC Secretariat, which is based in New York, works in partnership with States, international and regional organizations, civil society groups, foundations, and the private sector to mobilize concerted efforts to promote cross-cultural relations among diverse nations and communities.
